Latrobe halfback Bert Murray, who played for the club in the golden era of the 1920s and 30s, was the first Queenslander to play for Australia against England. The two sides met at the Exhibition Ground in 1925 (the England team, full of professional players, won 5-1).
At the time, Murray was described thus: “the international centre-half, is probably the ablest defensive player in the State. Superbly built and fast on the ball, he is a tower of strength to the [Latrobe] side. Besides representing Australia against England, he has also played for Australia against China.”
