Bardon Latrobe named Queensland Good Sports Club of the Year

We are thrilled to announce that the Alcohol and Drug Foundation has named Bardon Latrobe Football Club this year’s Queensland Good Sports Club of the Year.

Bardon Latrobe Football Club was named winner of the Good Sports award for its commitment to building a stronger, healthier and more family-friendly club environment.

Managed by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, Good Sports is Australia’s largest preventative health initiative in community sport, working with more than 9,000 Aussie clubs to build a healthier sporting nation.

The Good Sports Awards recognise strong clubs and the dedicated people within these clubs who are passionate about community sport and are committed to making their clubs the best they can be.

Bardon Latrobe Football Club has reached the highest level of the Good Sports program, implementing policies around alcohol, tobacco and safe transport.  As a Good Sports Healthy Eating Club, Bardon Latrobe FC is also committed to promoting healthy food and drink options. Additionally, this year the club was very excited to start a new women’s team.

“It is a great honour for the club to receive this award and we are very proud to be a Good Sports club. With the help of Good Sports, we have created an environment at the club which promotes good physical and mental health. This will benefit all of our members today and in the future,” said Club President Phil Cowlishaw.

Alcohol and Drug Foundation Chief Executive Officer Dr Erin Lalor has praised Bardon Latrobe Football Club, calling the club a community champion.

“Bardon Latrobe Football Club is a true local leader. The club should feel incredibly proud of its efforts in building a stronger and more connected community,” Dr Lalor said.

The core Good Sports program is nationally funded by the Australian Government.  In Queensland, Good Sports Healthy Eating is funded by the Australian Government and the Queensland Government.

“Community sporting clubs are becoming healthier and more family-friendly through Good Sports. We invite more clubs to join the program, so they too can benefit,” Dr Lalor said.

“We know running a community sporting club is hard work. That’s why the Good Sports team is committed to guiding clubs through the Good Sports program, making it easier for already busy volunteers to implement,” Dr Lalor said.
