MiniRoos Trials

If you are not a current player and interested in joining the club, please put your name down on our expression of interest list. Information can be found here  Expression of interest

Returning players who do not wish to play at the Kangaroos / Bilbies level are not required to trial.

Miniroos trials are held to select players for our Kangaroos (mixed gender) and Bilbies (girls only) teams, covering age groups from Under 8 to Under 12.

These teams represent the highest level of play within the Football Queensland community football structure. They’re designed for players who demonstrate above‑average skill and are ready to engage in more competitive, tactical football. Matches are faster‑paced, more strategic, and typically feature strong opposition from other Brisbane clubs.

For Season 2027, we hope to field Kangaroos and Bilbies teams in every age group (pending appropriate skill level and Football Queensland competitions existing).

Kangaroos and Bilbies teams usually train twice per week, with sessions offering more structured coaching and skill development.

Kangaroos and Bilbies registrations require an additional fee per player/season. The amount is still to be confirmed, but previous years have been approximately $80.

Who are trials for

Miniroos trials are for players going into Under 8 to Under 12 in the following season who want to play at Kangaroos or Bilbies level.

Trials are open to both current club members and new players from outside the club.

When and where

Player trials are held annually in October and November, ahead of the upcoming winter season.

Sessions take place at Bowman Park across selected weekends.

How trials work

Selection for Kangaroos and Bilbies teams is based on player ability and readiness, as assessed through club trials or coach recommendations. These teams are not formed socially, placements reflect each player’s development and suitability for this level of play.

  1. Registration
All players wishing to trial must register.

  2. Role of coaches
Coaches who believe a player could be ready for Kangaroos or Bilbies should encourage them to attend trials.

  3. Session 1: Skill Stations (U8 - U10 only)
All players, including new and returning Kangaroos will attend Session 1, which focuses primarily on technical skills. Players rotate through several skill-based stations (e.g. dribbling, passing, shooting), and are assessed at each. Scores are reviewed collectively, and selected players are invited to Session 2.

Session 1 and 2 are held on separate days.

  4. Session 2: Game Play (U8 - U12)
This is for returning Kangaroos players and those players successful from Session 1.
This session is predominantly game-based, allowing assessors to observe players in live match scenarios. Players may be trialled in both preferred and alternate positions. At the conclusion of this session, assessors determine team offers and likely placement for the upcoming season. Consideration is given to team balance and ensuring each player’s continued enjoyment and development.

  5. Coaches involvement
Coaches who are interested in coaching a Kangaroos or Bilbies team will be invited to be part of the trial process, however this does not guarantee your child or other players you prefer will necessarily be selected.

  6. Offers & Confirmation
Offers will be sent via email. A deposit is required to secure a player’s place for the season.

MiniRoos trials – Our philosophy

At Bardon Latrobe, the purpose of our Kangaroo and Bilbies teams is not to identify “the best” players, but to build balanced, competitive teams that promote fun, fairness, and growth for all. Our aim is to avoid lopsided matches, whether wins or losses, and instead create weekly games that are challenging, enjoyable, and developmentally appropriate. This approach is shared by clubs across the league and reflects a commitment to positive experiences for every player.

Our focus is not on grooming elite athletes, but on fostering a welcoming, community-based environment. The majority of our players do not participate in Kangaroo or Bilbies teams, and every one of them plays a valued role in our club.

Selections are made using a combination of coach feedback from the season and any relevant trial data. Our goal is to ensure each child is placed where they can thrive, on and off the pitch.

Help us out

  1. Support our trials
We rely on a small group of volunteers to run smooth, fair MiniRoos trials. If you’re able to help with setup, pack down, or assisting with player assessments, your support makes a huge difference.

  2. Interested in coaching?
If you’re thinking about coaching a team this season we’d love to hear from you. Coaching is one of the most rewarding ways to contribute to the club and help our players grow.
